![]() ![]() But there's one that seems to have a more lasting feeling along with it. Several songs bring back memories of something. We monopolized the bowling alley jukebox and played "Start Me Up" at least ten times per game which usually annoyed the daylights out of everyone else in the bowling alley! Good times. I was a member of a high school bowling team called "The Bowling Stones" (lame, I know but we thought we were clever). In the fall of 1981, my senior year, this song was inescapable. Every time I hear the song now, I think of that moment. At first, I wasn't sure exactly what to make of it but I remember thinking at the time, "the more I hear it, the more I'll like it" which is exactly what happened. I remember those familiar tingles of excitement realizing that I was sharing the moment with many people all over the northeast. It was late afternoon/early evening and the DJ said that it was the "long awaited new single from John Lennon and had just arrived at the station". I remember hearing this on the radio (on an AM station from either from NYC or Buffalo-had to be a clear channel station and I don't mean the media conglomerate) while sitting in a pickup truck in Littleton, Maine (wayyyyy up north) in a snow storm in October, 1980. John Lennon's "(Just Like) Starting Over". Instead of saying, "Do ya'll want to do something Friday night?" You'd just say "We'll see you Friday night!" I have no idea where they are now, maybe W. Kinda off topic, especially when I'm ranting about people going off topic, but did you ever have friends that were so close, that you did not even have to make plans to see them on weekends, you just took for granted you would see them and then when you got together, you made plans? That was them. Every time I hear that song now (as I did five minutes ago), it makes me smile and think of them. We had so much fun doing that, and probably did it 30 or so times. Probably about 13 years ago, my wife (then girlfriend) and another couple would hang out at their house EVERY Friday and most Saturday nights and play cards, drink beer (usually Miller Lite, unless we just got paid, then it would be Newcastle) and smoke Swisher Sweets (!) and we would call our local radio station and request Lunatic Fringe. It's my thread, it can disappear in 20 minutes or we can play by my rules. Sorry for the rant, I've just seen thse things snowball. Not a list of twenty songs, w/ an explanation by each one of them. These threads seem to derail easy, like the "What concert are you going to tonight," and people post what they've seen in the past month, or who they're seeing this October. ![]()
